The JGI is leveraging its current partnerships to offer new capabilities and resources to users through a BER data ecosystem.

A data ecosystem is a connected resource where data from different organizations is discoverable and accessible. Linking the resources of powerful institutions like the JGI, KBase, NCBI, NMDC, EMSL and the Protein Data Bank enables predictive ecosystem biology. The collaborations present exciting possibilities for scientific exploration, granting access to diverse datasets that deepen our understanding of how organisms interact with each other and with their environment and help unravel these complexities

This ecosystem serves users better in the following ways:
  • Data integration is critical to exploring research questions in a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary way.
  • We also work with our partners to ensure platforms are future-ready for advancements enabled by artificial intelligence and other tools.
  • By bringing users together through our systems, we build far-reaching communities of researchers to bring down barriers to productivity.

Through its partnership with NERSC and the DOE Energy Sciences Network (ESNet), the JGI has unique access to both expertise and infrastructure to facilitate these efforts. Particular areas of emphasis will be the development of tools and infrastructure for microbiome data science, and the development of new informatics tools specifically optimized for high-performance computing environments.

KBase is a critical partner in enabling systems biology analyses, such as metabolic modeling, that go well beyond genome annotation and analysis. The JGI and KBase seek to enable users to seamlessly access and analyze data on scales ranging from single genes and individual genomes to metagenomes to systems-level modeling and understanding. JGI and KBase are designated DOE Office of Science Public Reusable Research (PuRe) Data Resources are authoritative providers of data or capabilities in their respective subject area.
