White Rot: Nature's Wood Pulp Processor

Phanerochaete chrysosporium is a white rot fungus—the only known microbe capable of breaking down plant lignin, one of the most abundant natural materials on Earth. Unlike some of the white rot fungi, it leaves the cellulose of the wood virtually untouched. It also has a very high optimum temperature (about 40ºC), which means it can grow on wood chips in compost piles that attain a very high temperature.
