Svilen Tzonev

Svilen Tzonev, Informatics Department Head, assumed this role in August, 2009. The Department Head provides leadership for computational science, data management, software and web development, and systems administration, and is responsible for defining, assessing, communicating, and implementing JGI’s informatics infrastructure plan. The Department Head has broad latitude in planning and scheduling work to meet JGI informatics goals and objectives, including the formulation and direction of informatics projects to enhance the JGI’s informatics infrastructure.

Svilen comes to the JGI with a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, an MBA from St. Mary’s College, and over 10 years experience managing and directing bioinformatics and informatics technology departments within the Life Sciences industry. Most recently, Svilen served as Senior Director of Software and Bioinformatics with Illumina in Hayward, CA. He has also served as Senior Director of Software and Bioinformatics for both Solexa and GE Healthcare.
